Set Goals
Setting goals for green building will foster political will, create a framework that guides planning and implementation, and establish metrics to measure performance.

Green building goals may be straightforward and easy to measure, such as the number of certified green building projects. Or they may be more involved and require an evaluation protocol to measure. Start by aligning green building goals with the community’s climate action plan or other city environmental or social priorities. Goals may address one or more of the following:

Environmental Goals

  • Greenhouse gas emissions reductions targets for the building industry by sectors: municipal, commercial and residential.
  • Environmental performance goals that relate to other local government priorities, such as energy and water conservation, renewable energy generation, heat island reduction, water quality and stormwater, waste reduction and recycling, transportation management, and human health.

Social Goals

  • Increase in affordable housing stock.
  • Enhancements that support universal accessibility.
  • Local, quality jobs in design, construction, operations and maintenance.

Market Adoption Goals

  • Number of certified green buildings and overall square footage by sector, including new construction, renovations and existing buildings.
  • Annual growth in the green building market by sector.
  • Number of green housing units, and green affordable housing units.

Education & Outreach Goals

  • Number of staff and industry professionals that received green building training.
  • Number of LEED Accredited Professions on staff and industry professionals in the community.
  • Number of site visits to green building program website.

Financial Goals

  • Operational costs savings for municipal buildings.
  • Infrastructure operational and capital investments cost savings.
  • Economic development.
  • Several national programs suggest goals that you can adopt as part of your green building plan. By joining other communities that have adopted these goals, you can help create the critical mass needed to push your city or country into taking more effective action on climate change.
