Education and outreach
Local governments can play a key role in increasing awareness, acceptance, knowledge and skills through targeted education and outreach strategies. Actions may include:
  • Coordinate staff education and training opportunities. Start with by inviting local or regional green building experts to present during staff meetings and events. Host internal workshops such as private LEED Workshops.
  • Develop educational materials to inform elected officials such as green building facts and speaking points. The US Green Building Council’s Press Kit materials include fact sheets that can be used to create speaking points.
  • Collaborate with strategic partners to identify educational priorities for industry professionals. Participate in the delivery of educational workshops, programs and events. Portland, Oregon’s ReTHINK Annual Education Program is co-hosted by the local US Green Building Council Chapter and partners with local and state agencies.
  • Develop a green building program website and outreach materials. Seattle’s Department of Planning & Development hosts the city’s green building program and website, and publishes a monthly newsletter that features regular articles on green building.
