Water and wastewater infrastructure can consume significant energy. Water distribution and wastewater treatment, for example, account for about 2.4 percent of Toronto’s total electricity consumption, nearly triple that of the city’s electrified subway and streetcar system.

Best practices, such as water conservation, can reduce energy demand as well as address other sustainability issues, such as preserving water sources.
