Successful implementation relies on a number of factors:
- An enabling administrative framework.
- Adequate and appropriate staffing.
- Supportive financing mechanisms and budget allocation.
- Partnerships with external organizations to provide money financial and technical resources.
- A realistic and adaptable timeline.
Asset Management
Asset management programs are key to successful implementation of sustainable infrastructure. These computerized tools manage and deliver information on infrastructure systems and facilities. The information allows program managers to make informed decisions about maintenance, upgrades and replacement. Asset management programs can also enable new approaches, for example allowing managers to use service levels as a basis for planning. Managers have more flexibility and can explore different strategies for meeting end service goals and optimizing other benefits. They also gain a clearer understanding of the costs involved.
Creating more sustainable infrastructure may require revisions in different planning documents:
- Community Energy Plans
- Liquid Waste Management Plans
- Solid Waste Management Plans
- Stormwater Management Plans
Policy tools (such as bylaws, codes etc.) will probably also need to be changed to assure successful implementation. Refer to the Policy Levers pages.
