Planning for sustainable infrastructure systems often includes creating a plan that looks in a coordinated way at the community’s utility infrastructure systems. Individual infrastructure plans can be created as well. These include:
- A community energy or climate change plan
- A water supply plan
- A wastewater management strategy or liquid waste management plan
- A solid waste management plan
- A stormwater management plan
The steps in planning for all or any of these include:
- Committing to a range of goals and targets, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
- Taking early steps to begin to make progress while planning occurs.
- Assessing the current context and condition of infrastructure.
- Setting goals and targets for both overall emission reductions and for individual aspects of any system.
- Developing an action plan.
- Implementing the plan.
- Monitoring the implementation and making refinements.
