Comprehensive Guides and Initiatives
There are several comprehensive guides and initiatives to green neighborhoods. These can help understand them, and they can be used to support changes in neighborhood development through associated awards and recognition.

Local governments can use these frameworks as the basis for policy, as well as implementation and evaluation.

The most comprehensive of these (see Resources, at right) are:

  • LEED-ND: U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND), a rating system that can also be used to evaluate performance.

  • Charter of the New Urbanism: Congress for New Urbanism’s Charter of the New Urbanism, which outlines principles for great neighborhood design.
