Suburbs farther from city centers usually have a pattern of winding streets and cul-de-sacs that make for indirect travel. To create green neighborhoods in this context, two actions are essential, in addition to those addressed for infill:
- Creating connections from street to street for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency response vehicles.
- Creating mixed-use retail streets with enough homes and jobs to support regular transit service.
Depending on the physical layout, the new neighborhood plan may need to include:
- Acquiring new rights-of-way within the neighborhood to make pedestrian routes more direct.
- Redesigning redesign of wide arterial corridors so they become narrower regional streets with compact mixed-use development on either side.
