Tranportation Demand Programs
Programs range from education to car-sharing and partnerships with transportation providers.

Educational programs, incentives, and programs that help remove perceived barriers to travel by other than car are among the ways to reduce traffic congestion without building more roads.

Other strategies include:

  • Walking buses: Encouraging children to walk to school by identifying safe routes or organizing “walking buses,” where students walk as a group along a fixed route and pick up or drop off “riders” along the way. (There is usually an adult “driver” in the lead and a “conductor” in the rear.”)
  • Car-free options: Designating a car-free day or closing streets temporarily for festivals or street parties.
  • Link with local transit: Working with the local transit provider to improve facilities and services, and to set up community bus pass programs.
  • Car sharing: Establishing car-sharing and car-pooling programs.
  • Link with taxis: Working with local taxi operators to provide innovative transit-like services.
  • Link with employers: Encouraging employers to undertake their own travel-management programs.
