Many planning processes proceed with little in the way of a formal monitoring program to measure its success on its performance goals. Green neighborhoods that are targeting greenhouse gas reductions, however, benefit from a monitoring program to demonstrate success in reducing emissions. The success of the LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) rating system, Sustainability Indicators initiatives, and local government Smart Growth and Sustainability Checklists is ample evidence of the value of monitoring.
