“Complete Streets” is an innovative concept to building healthier communities that is gaining popularity across the country. Two cities in Missouri – DeSoto and Ferguson – have become the first in the state to adopt Complete Streets ordinances. These ordinances will require them to “design, build, and maintain streets in a manner that accommodates safe and contiguous travel for all users—seniors, persons with disabilities, children, pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and cars.” More pedestrians and bicyclists help to decrease air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, boost the health and fitness of community members, and increase neighbor-to-neighbor interactions.
