Seattle City Light 's Neighorhood Power Project (NPP) is active in one City neighborhood for a year from July through the following June. After coordinating with other City Departments such as Seattle Pubtlic Utilities, Department of Neighoborhoods, and the Office of Housing, the program kicks off with a mailing to all residential customers informing them of NPP, offering free green audits by an SCL staff member, and requesting their interest in volunteering in various City-sponsored activities, particularly the "Porchlight Brigade" for distributing compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to their neighbors to encourage energy efficiency and neighborhood safety. CFL distribution is also promoted through the neighborhood's network of Block Watch Captains coordinating with the Seattle Police Department for the annual Night Out Agains Crime in August.
The green audit provides customized recommendations for reducing resource use and utility bills, promotes relevant City programs, and makes referrals to the investor-owned gas company's weatherization program. NPP also engages small businesses and multifamily building owners by offering bonus financial incentives through our energy conservation programs for those customer groups. The bonuses are advertised through direct mail marketing and focused staff outreach
